Today there are a variety of different types of ice surfaces in use.

As well as permanent ice rinks there are many companies who will hire out portable ice rinks. Smaller ice rinks are available for private parties whilst larger rinks are often hired by shopping centres or city councils to draw customers into the shopping areas.
